Korelya Capital, a Paris-based venture firm founded by Korean-born French minister Fluer Pellerin, is looking to expand in South Korea.Korelya Capital has established Korelya Capital Korea last month, according to industry sources.
Founded in 2016 by Pellerin, former French Minister of Digital Economy and Culture, Korelya Capital is an investment platform with over 300 million euros under management.
The firm has built strong ties with Korean companies. South Korean internet giant Naver and its Japanese affiliate LINE invested a combined 100 million euros into a startup accelerator fund K-Fund 1 created by Korelya Capital in September 2016. Naver made an additional investment of 100 million euros in 2017.
The investment has borne fruit as six out of 17 startups that Naver invested in via the K-Fund 1 have grown to become unicorns with corporate value of over 1 trillion won. Naver also invested in the K-Fund 2, which is being created by Korelya Capital.
The venture firm appointed Pierre Joo to lead the Seoul office. Joo has over 20 years of experience in business consulting and innovation across Europe and Asia.
Joo started his career in 1999 as co-founder of Net Intelligenz, now part of Publicis group. From 2003 to 2008, he was partner at strategy consulting firm Attali & Associés in Paris. From 2008 to 2010, he joined the No Com, a communication strategy consulting firm, where he developed its digital practice.
Korelya Capital plans to focus on investment in and consulting services for startups and unicorns in Korea. (Reporting by Gyoung-tae Kim)
