SK Innovation nominated Jang Dong-hyun, SK Inc’s co-chief executive and vice chairman, as a non-standing director on its board, the South Korean energy company said on Monday.

Jang will replace Yu Jeong-joon, SK E&S’s chief executive and vice chairman, on SK Innovation’s board. The company also nominated Kim Tae-jin, a professor at Korea University School of Law, and Park Jin-hei, former chief executive of Citibank Korea, for two board seats designated for outside directors.

The three nominees, including Jang, will be voted on SK Innovation’s annual general meeting scheduled for March.

The new role at SK Innovation would help Jang further solidify his place in the broader SK Group. SK Innovation is one of the South Korean conglomerate’s key affiliates alongside chipmaker SK Hynix and mobile carrier SK Telecom.

The nomination comes after Jang’s promotion to vice chairman as part of SK Group’s leadership reshuffle late last year, indicating that he has the full confidence of the group’s chairman Chey Tae-won.

Jang has served as co-chief executive of SK Inc, the conglomerate’s investment holding company, since 2016 and as a board director since 2020. Chairman Chey is one of the two other co-chief executives of the holding company.

Apart from SK Inc and SK Innovation, Jang has been serving as a director on five other companies under the SK umbrella. They include electric vehicle charger maker Signet EV, which SK Inc acquired in 2021, and SKC where Jang chairs the board.

Jang also serves as a director on boards of SK China, the conglomerate’s holding company in China, SK’s Southeast Asia investment unit, and SK Pharmteco, a contract development manufacturing organization founded by SK Inc in 2019.

A financial expert, Jang started his career in SK Group in 1991. He held several senior positions in Yugong, now known as SK Innovation, and SK Telecom. He served as chief executive of the telco before moving to SK Inc in 2016. (Reporting by Eun-a Jo)
