Cho Hyun-min, the youngest daughter of Hanjin Group’s Cho family, has been promoted to president in the South Korean conglomerate’s annual executive reshuffle on Wednesday, a year after she received a promotion to executive vice president. The latest promotion has made Cho, head of future growth strategy and marketing at Hanjin Transportation, the first executive in the conglomerate’s history to get promoted in two consecutive years.
Ryu Gyoung-pyo and Noh Sam-seok, executive vice presidents and co-chief executives of Hanjin Transportation, have also been promoted to the president role. At the same time, Ryu will transfer to Hanjin KAL, the conglomerate’s holding company, as chief executive, leaving Noh as the sole chief executive of Hanjin Transportation.
Taking a greater leadership role within the company, Cho is expected to move to be elected as director at the company’s annual general meeting scheduled for March, industry watchers said.
The board of Hanjin Transportation, the conglomerate’s logistics arm, comprises three inside directors and five outside directors. The term of the all three inside directors of the company will end in March 2023. But Ryu’s move to Hanjin KAL will leave one seat vacant.
Cho’s achievements at the company will also likely help to support her inclusion in the board of directors, industry watchers said.
“President Cho has successfully integrated new technologies such as the Internet of Things and artificial intelligence into the company’s logistics business, and also worked to increase long-term shareholder value by achieving notable results in leading the company’s green logistics initiative,” Hanjin Group said of the reason for her promotion.
Some speculate that Cho could be named as co-chief executive of Hanjin Transportation along with Noh after joining the board in March.
“There is nothing to comment at this moment,” an official at Hanjin Transportation said. “The board meeting will be convened in the coming weeks to decide items that will be voted on at the upcoming annual general meeting.” (Reporting by Su-jin Yoo)
