Samsung Electronics' mobile application processor Exynos is expected to grab a bigger market share in the second half as many of the tech giant’s mid-range smartphones are expected to feature the Exynos processor.Samsung's mid-range Galaxy A series smartphones are powered by its mid and low-range Exynos chipsets and they have sufficient potential to increase their market share in the second half, according to research firm Strategy Analytics on Thursday.
The Exynos 1280 is Samsung's new 5nm chipset for mid-range Galaxy smartphones and tablets. The Exynos 1280 is less powerful than the Exynos 1080 launched last year, but provides smoother gameplay. The Exynos 1280’s GPU is faster than MediaTek's Dimensity 900 processor, which is the closest chipset to the Exynos 1280, and provides better performance than the Snapdragon 750G processor inside the Galaxy A52 5G.
Samsung's recently launched Galaxy A33 and Galaxy A53 phones are powered by the Exynos 1280 chipset. Foreign media outlets expect that its low-range smartphone models like A13 4G, M series and F series may also feature the chipset. If Samsung can keep pricing the same, the Galaxy A33 could be a real winner when it comes to the specs/value ratio, according to Android Authority.
Galaxy A devices made up 58% of Samsung's smartphone sales in 2021, according to market research firm Omnia. The Galaxy A12 topped the most shipped phone list by a figure of whopping 51.8 million units.
Samsung’s share in the global smartphone application processor market was 8.7% last year behind Qualcomm, MediaTek and Apple.
The tech giant faced yield issues for its new Exynos 2200 chipset as the chipset was fitted to Galaxy S22 models in Europe and Russia only due to low yields. Some foreign media also presented pessimistic forecasts about the possibility of the Galaxy S22FE and Galaxy S23 to feature the Exynos 2200.
The Exynos 2200 also showed poorer performance compared to the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 in terms of classic CPU and GPU metrics using GeekBench 5.
Yet, the Exynos has enough potential to increase application processor market share, including various IT devices alongside mid to low-range smartphones. Samsung has used Exynos 4G and 5G chips for its tablets, smart watches and the Internet of Things. Chinese smartphone maker Vivo and Google have also used Samsung’s 5G chipset in their smartphones.
